Now open: Changi Airport’s Terminal 4 welcomes flights on its first full day of operations

Changi Airport’s brand new Terminal 4 is officially up and running — today marks its first full day of operations, with the first flight coming in from Hong Kong carrying 250 passengers as early as 5:25am. The same Cathay Pacific aircraft then turned around, boarded another 250 travelers, and departed T4 at 6:50am.

When arriving passengers disembarked, they were gifted orchids and a goodie tote bag stuffed with a plush toy, a fan, and a cardholder, noted Channel NewsAsia. There was even a grand welcome at the baggage belt with a spread of coffee and breakfast bites, and a performance by local band Lorong Boys, who serenaded them with instrumental melodies.

According to The Straits Times, it was a smooth start to the first day of operations, with airport staff present at the self-check-in stations to assist passengers. Travelers that the newspaper spoke to said they were impressed by the automated immigration clearance system, fuss-free process, and high-security elements.

One tourist even told TODAY that the T4 experience was almost “Disney World-like”, and that the taxi driver who brought them to the terminal could hardly contain his excitement.

Changi Airport Group revealed that the spacious new terminal will see 20 flights come through with about 6,700 passengers during its first 24 hours of operations.

Besides Cathay Pacific Airways, Korean Air also started operations at T4 today. Cebu Pacific and Spring Airlines will follow suit on Nov 2, while AirAsia and Vietnam Airlines will join them from Nov 7.

Even though T4 is only about half the size of T3 — at 225,000 sqm, it’s Changi Airport’s smallest terminal — it’s expected to see 16 million passengers pass through annually once it’s fully operational.
