First look: The newly revamped Maritime Experiential Museum at Resorts World Sentosa

If you’ve ever been to the S.E.A. Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa, you’ve probably passed by the Maritime Experiential Museum — a rather meh experience compared to the other museums in Singapore with more fascinating exhibitions.

Perhaps that’s why the RWS museum went through a nine-month overhaul to regroup and come up with more compelling concepts. Due to open on Dec 29, the attraction now hosts 15 themed galleries, including five new zones housing fresh installations, with elements of visual projections, multimedia shows, and hands-on interaction.

Visitors will start off with a greeting from four famous seafarers (in hologram form) before embarking on a maritime journey with replicas and projections of early trading vessels such as the Chinese Junk, Javanese Jong, and Borobudur Ship that frequented the Maritime Silk Route.

Other highlights that remain from the museum’s previous line-up include the Typhoon Theater, where you’ll get to experience the simulation of a ship sinking in a storm, and the Jewel of Muscat, a 9th century Arabian Dhow design that made the tumultuous 138-day trip from Oman to Singapore in 2010 with a crew of 15 using ancient navigational methods.

As for the five new zones, that’s where you’ll get to pick up navigational skills essential for sea explorers, experience a pirate attack on board a burning ship, discover the process of coin-making for currencies used in the Maritime Silk Route, take a tour through the four busy ports of Quanzhou, Oman, Calicut, and Malacca that connect China with the Middle East and Europe, and learn about the history of Singapore’s maritime industry.

The Maritime Experiential Museum opens on Dec 29. Daily 10am-7pm at Resorts World Sentosa.
