A taxi caught fire in the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) tunnel towards TPE on Tuesday evening (29 August), causing traffic to come to a standstill and heavy congestion.

There were no reported injuries after the fire was put out.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force told Yahoo News Singapore, “SCDF was alerted to a vehicle fire in the KPE tunnel towards TPE before PIE exit at around 7pm. SCDF dispatched one fire engine and one support vehicle to the location.

“The fire, which involved an engine compartment of a taxi, was extinguished by a member of the public using a hose reel prior to SCDF’s arrival. There were no reported injuries.”

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) tweeted at 8.04pm that there was an accident on the KPE towards the TPE after the ECP entrance with congestion till ECP (Changi) Exit and asked motorists to avoid Lanes 2, 3 and 4.

LTA also triggered an emergency announcement to ask motorists to “drive out of the tunnel now via the nearest exit. If unable, turn off your engine and walk to the nearest emergency exit.”

Alvin Foo, a passenger who was riding in a GrabCar vehicle towards MCE, was caught in the traffic congestion. He said, “At first, we thought it was a terrorist attack. They closed the whole KPE after the Fort Road turnoff and they asked people to walk out of the KPE. My cab was in the tunnel and we managed to turn off to the ECP.”
