The Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) tunnel was filled with billowing black smoke on Tuesday evening (Aug 29), when a Trans-Cab taxi caught fire, causing part of the tunnel to be shut down.
It is believed that the vehicle was a diesel cab, reported The Straits Times. The incident resulted in a massive traffic jam during the evening rush hour.
The LTA tweeted at 7:20pm that drivers should avoid lane four because of the accident.
According to Channel NewsAsia, witnesses claimed that emergency announcements were made by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), asking motorists to drive towards the nearest exit or, failing that, abandon their cars and leave the tunnel. However, no one was preventing cars from entering the tunnel.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the fire in the tunnel towards the Tampines Expressway (TPE) and before the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) exit around 7pm. One fire engine and one support vehicle were dispatched to the scene, and the flames were extinguished at 7:55pm.
No injuries were reported, said the SCDF.
