Public Transport Council may reduce transport fares in 2018
Public transport fees in Singapore may be slashed by more than 5 per cent in 2018, following a fare review by the Public Transport Council (PTC).
In a statement on Wednesday (30 August), the PTC announced that it has commenced the annual Fare Review Exercise. It will be guided by the existing fare adjustment formula, which is valid until the end of the exercise.
Based on this formula, the fare adjustment quantum for the 2017 Fare Review Exercise is -3.9 per cent. With the carry-over quantum of -1.5 per cent from 2016’s exercise, the fare adjustment quantum to be considered for this year’s exercise is -5.4 per cent.
“PTC will strike a balance between keeping our public transport fares affordable and ensuring the long-term viability of the public transport system,” said a PTC spokesman.
The PTC will announce its decision on the fare adjustment quantum in the last quarter of 2017. Train operators may submit their fare applications to PTC for consideration by 29 September.
