Shailene Woodley felt like 'a caged animal' following arrest
Shailene Woodley felt like "a caged animal" during her time in a jail cell following her arrest in October 2016.
The Divergent actress frequently joined protesters at the Standing Rock reservation in North Dakota to take a stand against the Dakota Access Pipeline, which threatened the Sioux tribe's sacred grounds and the quality of drinking water for millions of people.
In October, she was arrested for criminal trespassing and engaging in a riot and got her mum to record the incident for a Facebook Live video, and she has now revealed what she went through when she arrived at Morton County jail afterwards.
"I was strip-searched. Like get naked, turn over, spread your butt cheeks, bend over. They were looking for drugs in my a*s," she told Britain's Marie Claire magazine. "When you’re in a jail cell and they shut that door, you realise no one can save you. If there’s a fire and they decide not to open the door, you’ll die. You are a caged animal."
The Big Little Lies star also admitted that she and her friends experienced post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms following the events on Standing Rock so she decided to switch her phone off for three months earlier this year.
"There was so much trauma," she confessed. "Mine was like, 'What do I do now?' Kind of like a little bit of depression."
The 25-year-old avoided jail by accepting a deal - she pleaded guilty to one count of disorderly conduct in exchange for a year of unsupervised probation.
The protest, which received major press attention, was successful in halting the oil pipeline under the Obama administration, but current U.S. President Donald Trump reversed the decision and the structure was built and it became commercially operational in June.
Referring to Trump's declaration that "the water is clean" while standing in front of the pipeline, Shailene said, "Yeah, everybody still has water... except for the three leaks that have already happened..."
Towards the end of the interview, she told the reporter, "I signed a plea agreement... I’m on a year’s probation. I’ve gotta watch my a*s."
